RS Components & Viva IT Sponsor Launch48 Startup Weekend (21-23 Nov)

This year’s Launch48 Startup Weekend (21-23 November at Dock) has secured sponsorship from RS Components in Corby and Viva IT based at Dock, Leicester.

RS Components are one of the world’s leading high service distributor of electronics and maintenance products. Viva IT are a young software development company based in the heart of Leicester’s technology park who specialise in designing and creating web-based software to enhance and grow small and large businesses.

A lot of people are not aware of the similarities and differences between Incubation and Acceleration. This session will be a short talk followed by Q&A to help you decide what model is best for your needs. Speakers will be Arnaud Drapier, who worked for more than a decade with international incubators and accelerators, and Constantina Katsari, who is the current CEO of Incubate.

Xander Ashwell of Bulb Studios will talk about Designing for User Experience (UX), how it can help improve digital products, and how putting theory into practice can have a positive impact on your business and it’s users. Bulb Studios is an established digital design agency based in Leicester, using user centred design methods to provide tangible results for clients such as Jaguar Land Rover, Warner Bros., Domino’s Pizza, and Audi.

Hackathon for health, assisted living, social care and community, 15-16 Nov

The Hackathon for assisted living, health, social care and community 2014 is the second event in its series organised jointly by the Vir.AL research group and the Faculty of Technology of De Montfort University with the Leicestershire County Council in collboration with the DMU Square Mile project and University of Leicester.

This event will be hosted by De Montfort University during the weekend of 15-16th Nov. 2014 and brings together local communities, researchers, students and developers to build applications for solving social problems. Applications developed last year are continuing to be improved and developed further.

Problems and areas of work will be collected beforehand. This will then be filtered down by a judging panel into workable problems in the areas of:-

1. Housing
2. Mental Health
3. Health
4. Assisted living
and a Wild Card Table (to cover other interesting and feasible proposals)

Leicester is a Great City for Student Startups

If you’ve just started a course at University of Leicester or De Montfort University then welcome to Leicester! Both universities provide great support for student enterprise and there is a growing startup scene in the city which is really student-friendly. University of Leicester
The Career Development Service offer Business Startup and Enterprise support including some great bootcamps and networking events. Enterprise Inc provide funding and advice for finalists and recent graduates. Enactus are a student enterprise society.
